Roles of Ma & Pa

Your most important responsibility will be to love the youth. This love will be your greatest resource. There are potentially many things that might go wrong in our planning and execution of this trek, but we can take confidence in the Saviors’ words that “charity shall cover the multitude of sins”.

In addition, your spiritual preparation is of utmost importance and will help you be in tune with the Spirit that you may receive the help and guidance you need. To a great extent, the success of the program depends on your Spiritual Preparations. Always strive to show an example of what a celestial marriage should be.

Please avoid being critical of any aspects of the Trek. Seek the Spirit in understanding the purpose of these activities. If you do have concerns, consult with the appropriate leaders. Also, know that you have the support of your Stake Presidency. They have placed this trust in you.

IMPROVISATION is essential for you to be a successful Ma or Pa. If you have ever been involved in a project of this magnitude, you will know that nothing ever goes exactly according to plan. There is never cause for panic though. During trek, always be on the lookout for opportunities for your family to serve.

Allow the youth to do the work as much as possible because you need to reserve your strength to do your job, as a Ma or Pa generally will not be pulling the handcart. You will lead your family through several unique and sometimes challenging experiences. When challenges arise in your family, it will be your responsibility to resolve them with the Spirit and in the most positive way possible.

You are responsible for your family. The other Ma’s and Pa’s are responsible for theirs. If you see a youth from another family acting inappropriately, it is best to let his/her own Ma or Pa handle it unless there is immediate danger. Tell them about it and let them decide what to do. Hopefully, they can turn the situation into a meaningful one through the relationship they have developed. Stake leaders will also be available to step in and help if situations get to the point, you feel you need some intervention.

Watch the other families and make sure your family is at the same stage of the program. The times listed in the itineraries are approximate; they are only a guide. Take advantage of the opportunity to relax and enjoy each other. Again, the key to a smooth-running conference is not sticking to a strict schedule but developing sensitivity to what your family is doing.
